Liabilities and the net worth figure
Recording what is owed, and how OptiVida arrives at the number it prints.
The fifth step records what is owed. Assets less liabilities is the net worth OptiVida prints.
Recording a liability
- Bank / Lender Namerequired
Who the money is owed to.
- Loan Typerequired
Home Loan, Car Loan, Personal Loan, Education Loan, Business Loan, Credit Card, ODCC or Other.
- Loan Categoryrequired
Secured Loan or Unsecured Loan.
- Description (Optional)
Anything the type and lender do not convey, such as a loan account number. It prints after the loan type in Annexure (iii): "Home Loan – LAN 12345".
- Amount Outstanding (INR)required
The balance owed as at the certificate date — not the sanctioned limit and not the original amount borrowed.
Warning
Enter the amount outstanding, not the amount sanctioned. A home loan sanctioned at ₹50,00,000 with ₹12,00,000 repaid is a liability of ₹38,00,000. Using the sanction figure understates net worth by everything already repaid.
Where nothing is owed, leave the step empty: Annexure (iii) then states that the individual has declared no outstanding liabilities, worded for one individual or for several.
Secured and unsecured
The category tells a reader whether an asset stands behind the borrowing. A home loan secured on a property in step 4 is a different proposition from an unsecured personal loan of the same size, and banks and embassies read the distinction.
It affects presentation, not arithmetic — both reduce net worth by their outstanding amount.
How the figure is computed
Everything from steps 2, 3 and 4, less everything here. OptiVida does the arithmetic; there is no field where you type a total.
That is deliberate. A certified net worth should be traceable to the holdings it came from — if the number could be typed, the schedule behind it would be decorative.
Note
A negative net worth prints as a negative. OptiVida does not floor it at zero or suppress it — if liabilities exceed assets, that is what the schedule says.
Where you see it
Net worth so far, below the list of steps, keeps a running total as you enter each holding. On the Review & Issue step it becomes Net worth, and the summary at the top of that step shows it again with the movable, immovable and liability totals, so you can check it before the certificate exists.
Tip
The income tax certificate collects no assets, so it has no net worth figure at all. See About this certificate.
